Start boiling water in a small saucepan.

Add sugar to the boiling water, stirring until it completely dissolves.

Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat.

Split a vanilla bean lengthwise and place it in a heatproof jar or bottle.

Pour the hot syrup over the vanilla bean, cover, and let stand for 8 to 10 hours.

Remove the vanilla bean, then bottle and store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
