Tzimmes

A traditional Jewish sweet dish, Tzimmes is often served at holidays and family gatherings, symbolizing good luck.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 9x13-inch or 5-quart baking dish.

  2. Chop sweet potatoes and carrots into 1 1/2-inch pieces, then combine them with prunes in a large bowl.

  3. Measure 3 teaspoons of orange zest and 1 cup of orange juice.

  4. In a separate bowl, combine the orange zest, orange juice, water, honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, Kosher salt, and black pepper.

  5. Transfer the vegetable mixture to the prepared baking dish and pour the liquid over it.

  6. Cover the dish and bake for 1 hour.

  7. Uncover, add butter, and bake for an additional 45-60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the sauce thickens.
