Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
-
Melt 3 tablespoons butter with 1 cup water in a small saucepan, then let cool to warm.
-
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water in a separate small bowl.
-
Combine buttermilk, honey, sugar, salt, and vinegar in a large bowl, then stir in the cooled butter-water and yeast mixture.
-
Gradually mix in bread flour until the dough becomes too stiff to stir.
-
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead in the remaining flour until it is firm and smooth.
-
Place the dough in a buttered bowl, turn to coat, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (45 to 60 minutes).
-
Punch down the dough, transfer to a floured surface, and knead out air.
-
Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape into loaves, and place into buttered bread pans.
-
Cover and allow the loaves to rise again until doubled (30 to 45 minutes).
-
Melt 1 tablespoon butter, brush onto the risen loaves, and make three shallow slashes on top of each.
-
Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown, then remove from pans and cool on a rack.
