Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  2. Melt 3 tablespoons butter with 1 cup water in a small saucepan, then let cool to warm.

  3. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water in a separate small bowl.

  4. Combine buttermilk, honey, sugar, salt, and vinegar in a large bowl, then stir in the cooled butter-water and yeast mixture.

  5. Gradually mix in bread flour until the dough becomes too stiff to stir.

  6. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead in the remaining flour until it is firm and smooth.

  7. Place the dough in a buttered bowl, turn to coat, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (45 to 60 minutes).

  8. Punch down the dough, transfer to a floured surface, and knead out air.

  9. Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape into loaves, and place into buttered bread pans.

  10. Cover and allow the loaves to rise again until doubled (30 to 45 minutes).

  11. Melt 1 tablespoon butter, brush onto the risen loaves, and make three shallow slashes on top of each.

  12. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown, then remove from pans and cool on a rack.
