Instructions

  1. Combine red wine, optional bourbon or vodka, sugar, orange zest, raisins, cardamom pods, sliced ginger root, a cinnamon stick, and whole cloves in a 2- to 3-quart pot.

  2. Heat the mixture to 175 F (77 C) and simmer for 2 minutes.

  3. Remove from heat and let steep for 1 hour.

  4. Strain to remove the fruit and spices, then gently reheat the glögg.

  5. Serve each glass with 2 tablespoons of blanched, slivered almonds and raisins, garnished with an orange slice.
