Traditional English Trifle Recipe

Instructions

  1. Halve sponge cake or sponge fingers and arrange in a trifle bowl; optionally brush with 2 to 3 tablespoons sherry and let soak for five minutes.

  2. Layer 2 cups of fresh raspberries or strawberries over the cake.

  3. Pour 1/3 of 2 cups liquid gelatin over the layers and refrigerate until set.

  4. Once firm, add the remaining 2/3 gelatin and allow it to set completely.

  5. Spread 2 cups of custard evenly over the set gelatin layer.

  6. Top with 2 cups of softly whipped cream.

  7. Decorate with fresh berries, toasted almonds, or grated chocolate as desired before serving.
