Instructions
-
Combine apples and water in a medium saucepan, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the apples achieve an applesauce consistency.
-
Strain the cooked apple mixture through a sieve or food mill to create a smooth puree.
-
Stir sugar and spices into the puree.
-
Thicken the apple butter using one of the following methods:
-
Slow Cooker Method: Transfer the sweetened apple puree to a slow cooker, leaving the lid slightly ajar. Cook on low for 6 to 12 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally, until the butter is very thick and holds its shape.
-
Microwave Method: Cook the sweetened puree in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-minute intervals, stirring frequently, until the butter reaches a thick consistency.
-
Stovetop Method: Cook the sweetened puree in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat for 1 to 2 hours, stirring frequently, until it becomes very thick.
-
Oven Method: Preheat oven to 250 F. Place the sweetened puree in a heatproof dish and bake for 1 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally, until it thickens significantly.
-
To can: Fill hot sterilized jars with the hot apple butter, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Secure with hot sterilized lids and rings, then process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Remove and cool completely before storing.
