Tortas Fritas: Argentinian and Uruguayan Fry Bread

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; blend in 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons shortening or lard until well mixed.

  2. Gradually add milk, stirring and kneading to form a soft, smooth dough, adding more flour if too wet.

  3. Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 3 1/2-inch circles, or flatten 10 dough balls into 1/4-inch pancakes; poke a hole in the center of each piece.

  4. Heat 1 inch of vegetable oil (or melted shortening/lard) in a small skillet until hot. Fry dough circles in batches, turning once, until golden brown on both sides.

  5. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with sugar while hot; serve warm.
