Combine 2 ounces whiskey, 3/4 ounce lemon juice, and 1/2 to 3/4 ounce simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

If using egg white, combine ingredients in an empty shaker, dry shake for 30 seconds, then add ice.

Shake vigorously until well chilled.

Strain into a chilled sour glass or over fresh ice in an old-fashioned glass.
