Instructions
-
Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl.
-
Add 1/2-inch butter pieces and an egg to the flour mixture. Mix with fingers until sandy and crumbly.
-
Stir in 1/4 cup water, adding more tablespoon by tablespoon until a soft, kneadable dough forms. Knead briefly, then cover and let rest for 20-30 minutes.
-
Cut the cheese into approximately 24 sticks, each 3-4 inches long and 1/2 inch square.
-
On a floured surface, roll out half the dough into a 12x14-inch rectangle and cut into twelve 1-inch wide strips.
-
Wrap each cheese stick spirally with a dough strip, overlapping edges and sealing ends completely. Repeat for all cheese sticks and remaining dough.
-
Heat vegetable oil in a heavy, high-sided skillet over medium heat.
-
Fry the wrapped cheese sticks in batches until golden brown. Transfer to paper towel-lined plates to cool.
-
Serve warm with your preferred dipping sauce.
