Instructions

  1. Combine 3/4 cup warm water and 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast in a large bowl, stirring to dissolve.

  2. Stir in 1 teaspoon salt, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/2 cup milk until combined.

  3. Mix in 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening and 2 cups flour, then gradually add more flour until the dough separates from the spoon.

  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes, adding small amounts of flour until smooth and not sticky.

  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat, then cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled.

  6. Punch down the risen dough.

  7. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes.

  8. Form the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan.

  9. Cover and let the loaf rise for 30 minutes or until doubled.

  10. Preheat oven to 375 F.

  11. Score the risen dough with three slashes across the top.

  12. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown.

  13. Remove bread from pan and cool completely on a rack before slicing.
