Instructions

Combine 3/4 cup warm water and 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast in a large bowl, stirring to dissolve.

Stir in 1 teaspoon salt, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/2 cup milk until combined.

Mix in 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening and 2 cups flour, then gradually add more flour until the dough separates from the spoon.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes, adding small amounts of flour until smooth and not sticky.

Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat, then cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled.

Punch down the risen dough.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes.

Form the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan.

Cover and let the loaf rise for 30 minutes or until doubled.
