Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F and start boiling salted water.

  2. Halve bell peppers vertically, remove stems, seeds, and membranes.

  3. Boil pepper halves for 5 minutes, then drain.

  4. Combine onion, 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and tuna in a bowl.

  5. Fill pepper shells with the tuna mixture.

  6. Mix melted butter with the remaining 1/2 cup breadcrumbs and sprinkle over stuffed peppers.

  7. Place in a shallow baking dish and bake for 15 minutes, adding shredded cheese if desired 5 minutes before completion.
