  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare an 8-inch-square baking pan by greasing and flouring it.

  2. Combine sifted flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in one bowl; mix well.

  3. Whisk milk, egg, and melted butter in another bowl. Incorporate the dry mixture and beat for 2 minutes.

  4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and arrange sliced strawberries on top.

  5. For the crumb topping, combine flour and sugar, then cut in butter until crumbly. Mix in chopped pecans or walnuts if desired.
