Start boiling a large pot of salted water and cook pasta until al dente; reserve 1/2 cup cooking water, then drain pasta.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, 1 teaspoon salt, and red pepper flakes; cook for 3 minutes until translucent.
