Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and lightly grease a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish.

  2. Sauté onion in olive oil over medium-low heat until tender, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  3. Add ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks until no longer pink; drain excess fat.

  4. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, parsley, sugar, mushrooms (if using), crushed pepper, and oregano; bring to a simmer, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. Meanwhile, start boiling salted water and cook spaghetti as directed on the package; drain well.

  6. Stir the cooked spaghetti into the meat mixture.

  7. Layer half of the spaghetti and meat mixture into the prepared casserole dish, then top with half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

  8. Repeat layering with the remaining spaghetti mixture and cheeses.

  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and the cheese has melted.
