Southern Turnip Greens With Ham Shanks Recipe

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat, then sauté onion until translucent.

  2. Add ham shanks and cook for 6 minutes, turning occasionally.

  3. Stir in garlic and chicken broth; bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.

  4. Remove ham shanks and set aside.

  5. Add turnip greens to the liquid in batches until wilted.

  6. Stir in sugar and peppers; continue simmering.

  7. Debone ham shanks, shred the meat, and return it to the pot.

  8. Mix well; bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.

  9. Cover and simmer for another 30 minutes, or until greens are very tender. Taste and season with salt if needed; serve immediately.
