Southern Deep-Fried Okra

Crispy deep-fried okra, featuring a cornmeal and flour coating, makes an excellent side dish for any meal.

Instructions

  1. Heat 2-3 inches of oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F.

  2. Combine cornmeal, flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl.

  3. Pour buttermilk or milk into a separate bowl.

  4. Dip okra pieces in buttermilk, then roll in the flour mixture to coat.

  5. Fry coated okra in batches for 3-5 minutes until golden brown.

  6. Remove fried okra with a slotted spoon to paper towels and season with salt and pepper.

  7. Serve hot.
