Southern Barbecue Sauce

A classic, homemade tomato-based barbecue sauce can be prepared with common ingredients, adaptable to be spicy or mild.

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a medium saucepan, then cook minced garlic for 15-30 seconds until fragrant.

  2. Add ketchup, cider vinegar, water, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, paprika, bay leaf, Tabasco sauce, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice; simmer over medium-low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. Remove from heat, stir in butter until melted, then cool for 10-15 minutes before using.

  4. For advance preparation, cool for 30 minutes, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
