Smoked Sausage With Cabbage and Apples
A hearty fall or winter casserole featuring layers of sausage, cabbage, apples, and onions, seasoned with warm spices, ideal with crusty bread and salad.

Preheat oven to 325 F.

Combine brown sugar, garlic, salt, nutmeg, allspice, and pepper in a small bowl.

In a large oven-safe Dutch oven, layer half of the cabbage, onion, apple, and sausage slices, then sprinkle with half of the spice mixture.

Repeat the layering process with the remaining ingredients and spice mixture.

Pour apple juice and vinegar over the layers.

Cover tightly and bake for 2 hours, stirring occasionally; add more juice if necessary.
