Sauerkraut and Apples

Instructions

  1. If baking, preheat oven to 325 F.

  2. Heat bacon drippings or butter in a Dutch oven; sauté onions until translucent, then add chopped apples and sauté until lightly caramelized.

  3. For stovetop or oven cooking: Stir in sauerkraut, water, brown sugar, mustard, and caraway seeds.

  4. Stovetop: Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer 50 minutes, stirring and adding water as needed.

  5. Oven: Cover and bake 50 minutes, stirring and adding water as needed.

  6. Then, for stovetop or oven, stir in applesauce, cover, and cook 10 more minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  7. For slow cooker cooking: Combine the sautéed onions and apples, sauerkraut, water, brown sugar, mustard, caraway seeds, and applesauce in the slow cooker. Cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 hours, then season with salt and pepper.
