Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C) and butter an 8-inch square baking dish.

In a bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, melted butter, and cinnamon; mix until crumbly.

Press half of this crumb mixture into the prepared dish, then top with sliced rhubarb.

In a saucepan, combine 1 cup granulated sugar, cornstarch, 1 cup water, and vanilla; cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens and clears.

Pour the thickened syrup over the rhubarb in the baking dish.

Evenly spread the remaining crumb mixture over the rhubarb filling.
