Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F and butter a 6-7 inch casserole dish.

  2. Layer 1/3 of the potatoes in the dish.

  3. Sprinkle with 1/3 each of the salt, pepper, garlic, and thyme, then top with 1/3 of the cheese. Repeat this layering process two more times.

  4. Pour the hot beef or chicken stock slowly along the edge of the dish.

  5. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes.

  6. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, until browned.
