Pork Steaks and Sauerkraut Recipe
A hearty one-pot pork steak and sauerkraut meal can be prepared for dinner using either an oven or stovetop.

Instructions

Trim some fat from pork steaks and render it in a Dutch oven.

Rinse, pat dry, and season pork steaks with salt and pepper.

Brown seasoned pork steaks in batches in the rendered fat, then transfer them to a platter.

Sauté onions in the Dutch oven drippings until translucent; add and slightly caramelize apples.

Stir in sauerkraut, water, brown sugar, mustard, caraway seeds, and salt; mix well.

For the oven method: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place pork steaks in the Dutch oven, cover with the kraut mixture, then cover and bake for 30 minutes.

Add potato wedges on top, cover, and bake an additional 30 minutes.

Check meat tenderness; if necessary, remove potatoes (if done) and continue baking pork and kraut until fully tender.

Transfer cooked meat and potatoes to a platter and keep warm.

Mix applesauce into the kraut, cover, and return to the oven for 15 minutes; serve with pan juices.

Alternatively, for the stovetop method: Place pork steaks in the Dutch oven, cover with the kraut mixture, then cover and simmer for 30 minutes.

Add potato wedges on top, cover, and simmer an additional 30 minutes.

Check meat tenderness; if necessary, remove potatoes (if done) and continue simmering pork and kraut until fully tender.
