Polish Honey-Spiced Vodka (Krupnik)

A quick-to-prepare Polish honeyed vodka, Krupnik, combines vodka steeped with spices, enjoyable hot or cold without aging.

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil for later use.

  2. Combine 2 tablespoons cold water and sugar in a large saucepan; heat until dissolved.

  3. Add the boiling water, vanilla bean, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon stick, peppercorns, and allspice to the saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes.

  4. Strain the syrup through cheesecloth or a coffee filter; return it to the saucepan.

  5. Add honey and orange zest; heat and stir until the honey dissolves. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.

  6. Gradually stir in the vodka.

  7. Serve Krupnik hot, or chill and serve cold.
