Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F if opting for the oven method.

  2. Slice and quarter the onion.

  3. In a large skillet, sauté the onion in 4 ounces of butter over low heat, stirring frequently until lightly caramelized for about 15 minutes.

  4. Add the cabbage, remaining 4 ounces of butter, salt, pepper, and water as needed.

  5. Sauté uncovered over low heat, stirring frequently, until the cabbage is tender but not browned, which takes about 30 minutes.

  6. For the stovetop, mix the sautéed cabbage and onion with cooked noodles, then adjust seasoning and serve.

  7. For the oven method, combine the cabbage mixture and cooked noodles in a large buttered gratin pan.

  8. Bake uncovered for approximately 30 minutes, until the top is lightly browned.
