Pineapple Turnovers

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Combine sugar, shortening, eggs, and vanilla; then mix in flour, salt, and baking soda. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour.

Drain pineapple, reserving 1/2 cup syrup.

In a saucepan, mix sugar and flour. Stir in pineapple, reserved syrup, lemon juice, margarine, and nutmeg. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened, then cool completely.

Roll dough 1/16-inch thick on a floured surface and cut into 3-inch rounds or squares.

Spoon 1 teaspoon of filling onto one side of each dough piece, fold, and pinch edges to seal.

Place on ungreased baking sheets, brush with milk, and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned, then immediately remove from baking sheets.
