Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare an 8-inch square pan by greasing and lining with parchment paper.

  2. For the peppermint swirl, beat cream cheese, confectioners' sugar, salt, egg, extract, and food coloring until fluffy.

  3. For the brownies, microwave butter, cocoa powder, and sugar in a large bowl, whisking until combined.

  4. Whisk in the extract, then gradually whisk in eggs one at a time, followed by the salt.

  5. Fold in flour and 1/3 cup crushed candy until just combined.

  6. Scrape most of the brownie batter into the prepared pan, reserving 3/4 cup.

  7. Dollop the peppermint swirl mixture over the brownie batter, then dollop the reserved brownie batter between the swirls.

  8. Use a skewer to gently swirl the two batters together to create a decorative pattern.

  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through.

  10. At the 25-minute mark, sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of candy over the brownies.

  11. Cool brownies completely, then lift from the pan, slice into 9 squares, and serve.
