Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.

  2. Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and allspice in a large bowl.

  3. Slice French bread into at least 1-inch thick pieces, preferably at a slight angle.

  4. Thoroughly soak each bread slice in the custard mixture, ensuring complete saturation for 5-10 minutes per side depending on bread freshness.

  5. In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, lightly brown soaked slices in butter for about 2 minutes per side.

  6. Transfer browned slices to a baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, then flip and bake for an additional 5 minutes until crisp and cooked through.

  7. Serve immediately, optionally topped with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fruit sauces.
