Oven-Dried Apples

Homemade dehydrated apple slices offer a healthy, portable snack that can be easily prepared in a standard oven.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to its lowest setting (140-150 F) with racks positioned inside.

  2. Combine water and vinegar in a nonreactive bowl.

  3. Peel and core apples, then slice them 1/4-inch thick crosswise, soaking each slice in the acidulated water immediately to prevent browning.

  4. Drain apple slices in a colander, then thoroughly pat them dry with towels.

  5. Place cooling racks on large rimmed baking sheets and arrange apple slices in a single layer without touching.

  6. Bake for 6-10 hours until desired leathery or crispy texture is achieved, propping the oven door open if it's not a convection oven. Rotate baking sheets occasionally for even drying.

  7. Cool apples on trays for 20 minutes, then test for dryness by tearing a piece; if moisture is visible, return to oven for additional 30-minute increments.
