Mash 2 halved and pitted ripe avocados in a mixing bowl, leaving large chunks.

Combine the mashed avocado with 1/4 cup finely chopped white onion, 1 crushed garlic clove, 1 minced small serrano chile, 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, salt to taste, and 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin if desired; mix thoroughly.

Stir in 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro until just incorporated.
