Old-Fashioned Orange Slice Cake

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F and grease and flour a 10-inch tube cake pan.

  2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then beat in eggs individually.

  3. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add to the batter.

  4. In a separate bowl, coat flour with dates, candy orange slices, and nuts.

  5. Add the flour mixture and coconut to the creamed batter, mixing thoroughly; the batter will be stiff.

  6. Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared pan.

  7. Bake for 2 1/2 hours.

  8. While the cake bakes, combine orange juice and confectioners' sugar in a bowl until smooth to make the topping.

  9. Immediately after removing the hot cake from the oven, pour the juice mixture over it, pricking the cake if desired.

  10. Let the cake remain in the pan overnight.

  11. Invert the cooled cake onto a plate, slice, and serve.
