Old Fashioned Granny Smith Applesauce

Combine apple slices and apple juice (or water) in a large saucepan.

Cook over medium-high heat, stirring until the mixture simmers and apples release their juices.

Add cloves, reduce heat, and cover.

Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring and crushing apples until tender and chunky; for a smoother sauce, add more liquid and cook longer.

Remove from heat, discard cloves, and stir in cinnamon and sugar to taste.

Stir in dried cranberries if desired.
