Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F and butter a 9x13 baking dish.

  2. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

  3. Cut 10 tablespoons of butter into the flour mixture until coarse.

  4. Gradually stir in milk to form a soft dough.

  5. Roll dough into an 1/8-inch thick rectangle and cut into 5-inch squares.

  6. Place apple pieces on each dough square, then sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

  7. Dot each dumpling with small cubes of the remaining 2 tablespoons butter.

  8. Moisten the dough edges with water, bring corners to the center, and pinch to seal.

  9. Arrange dumplings evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  10. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg; bring to a boil, stirring constantly.

  11. Pour the hot syrup over the arranged dumplings.

  12. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown and the syrup is thick.

  13. Serve warm.
