Instructions

  1. Lightly oil a crock pot.

  2. Wash, core, and quarter apples; place them in the crock pot and stir in cider or juice.

  3. Cover and cook on low for 10 to 18 hours or on high for 2 to 4 hours.

  4. Process the softened fruit through a food mill to remove skins.

  5. Return the milled fruit to the crock pot. For every pint (2 cups) of fruit, add 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp allspice, 1/2 tsp ground cloves, and 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg.

  6. Stir well. Cook on high for 6 to 8 hours, stirring every 2 hours.

  7. Remove the cover after 3 hours of the second cooking phase to allow the mixture to thicken.

  8. Spoon the hot apple butter into canning jars and process, or transfer to freezer containers.

  9. Let the apple butter cool before storing it in the freezer.
