Instructions
-
Lightly oil a crock pot.
-
Wash, core, and quarter apples; place them in the crock pot and stir in cider or juice.
-
Cover and cook on low for 10 to 18 hours or on high for 2 to 4 hours.
-
Process the softened fruit through a food mill to remove skins.
-
Return the milled fruit to the crock pot. For every pint (2 cups) of fruit, add 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp allspice, 1/2 tsp ground cloves, and 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg.
-
Stir well. Cook on high for 6 to 8 hours, stirring every 2 hours.
-
Remove the cover after 3 hours of the second cooking phase to allow the mixture to thicken.
-
Spoon the hot apple butter into canning jars and process, or transfer to freezer containers.
-
Let the apple butter cool before storing it in the freezer.
