Makizushi (Japanese Tuna Roll)

Japanese sushi rolls featuring a quick American-style canned tuna salad filling are easily prepared at home in 30 minutes.

Instructions

  1. Combine finely chopped onion, canned tuna, mayonnaise, and salt to create the tuna salad; optionally, add Japanese hot mustard for a spicy version.

  2. Cover a bamboo mat with plastic wrap, then place a nori sheet on top.

  3. Spread 1/4 portion of sushi rice evenly over the nori, followed by a horizontal line of tuna salad in the center.

  4. Firmly roll the bamboo mat to shape the sushi into a cylinder, then remove the mat and repeat for any remaining rolls.

  5. Wet a knife, then slice each sushi roll into bite-sized pieces.

  6. Serve with soy sauce, garnishing with gari shoga and sesame seeds if desired.
