Jewish Bread Machine Challah

Jewish challah, featuring a touch of honey sweetness, can be easily made in a bread machine, ideal for Rosh Hashanah.

Instructions

  1. Add salt, egg, egg yolk, water, honey, and oil to the bread pan. Layer flour over the liquids, then add yeast.

  2. Select the bread machine's Basic/White or Sweet cycle and Light Crust setting, then start.

  3. Pause the machine at the final rise's start. Transfer dough to a floured surface and punch it down.

  4. Divide dough into thirds. Roll each into a 10-inch rope. Arrange ropes parallel, braid them snugly, and tuck ends to form an oblong loaf.

  5. Brush the braid with beaten egg and sprinkle with optional sesame or poppy seeds, pressing them in.

  6. Remove the kneading paddle(s) from the pan. Place the braided loaf in the pan and resume the cycle.

  7. After the machine signals completion, remove the bread and cool it on a wire rack before slicing.
