Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.

  3. In a separate mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then mix in egg and vanilla.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, beating until smooth.

  5. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, place on an ungreased baking sheet, and make a thumbprint in the center of each.

  6. Drain maraschino cherries, reserving their juice, and place one cherry into each cookie indentation.

  7. In a small saucepan, melt chocolate pieces with sweetened condensed milk over low heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of the reserved cherry juice, adding more if a thinner consistency is desired.

  8. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the chocolate topping over each cherry.

  9. Bake for 10 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
