Instructions

  1. Wash 1 pound green beans and trim their stem ends, leaving them whole or cut.

  2. Add 1 to 2 inches of water to a medium saucepan, insert a steamer basket, and bring the water to a boil over high heat.

  3. Place the green beans into the steamer basket, reduce heat to medium, cover, and steam for 5 to 7 minutes until desired tenderness is reached.

  4. Discard the water, return the steamed beans to the saucepan, and add 1 to 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. Heat until the butter melts.

  5. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, then toss to coat and serve.
