Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and start boiling a large pot of water with 1 tablespoon of honey.
-
In a large bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and lukewarm water; let stand for 10 minutes until foamy.
-
Stir in 2 cups of flour and salt, then add 2 more cups of flour and mix until a dough ball forms.
-
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.
-
Continue kneading for 15 minutes, gradually adding food coloring three drops at a time, alternating colors, until the dough is elastic, smooth, soft, and marbled with bold streaks.
-
Form the dough into a ball, place in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.
-
Punch down the dough, turn onto a floured surface, and knead for 2 minutes until elastic.
-
Divide the dough into 8 to 12 equal pieces.
-
For each piece, roll into a 4 to 6-inch rope, wrap it around your hand, and press the ends together to form a bagel, ensuring the hole is large.
-
Place shaped bagels on a lightly floured pan, cover, and let rest for 25 minutes.
-
Once the water boils, reduce to a simmer and carefully boil bagels, 3-4 at a time, for 1 minute per side.
-
Remove boiled bagels with a slotted spoon and drain on a lint-free towel.
-
Place bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, rotating halfway through, until crispy.
-
Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
