Homemade Rose Water and Rose Oil

A home distillation technique yields rose water and essential rose oil, also applicable for other herb extracts.

Instructions

  1. Start boiling water and rose petals for distillation: Place a heavy glass ramekin (3/4 full of water) in a deep stockpot. Surround it with rose petals and add water halfway up the ramekin's side. Place a shallow soup bowl on top of the ramekin, then bring this mixture to a boil.

  2. Reduce heat to a simmer.

  3. Place a sealing stainless steel bowl on top of the stockpot, ensuring it does not touch the inner soup bowl, and fill it with ice.

  4. Simmer for 3 to 4 hours, replenishing ice as it melts.

  5. Extract the collected rose water and essential oil from the inner soup bowl, separating the oil if desired.
