Homemade Plain Cake Doughnuts

Instructions

Heat oil in a deep fryer or stock pot to 360 F.

Sift flour, then resift it with sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.

Crumble butter into the flour mixture, then stir in milk and egg.

Lightly work the dough with floured hands until just moistened, then knead 2-3 times on a floured surface. Pat dough to 1/4-inch thickness.

Dip a doughnut cutter in flour and cut out doughnuts, re-working scraps as needed.

Using a slotted spoon, carefully lower 2-3 doughnuts into the hot oil, allowing oil temperature to recover between batches.

Fry one side for 2 minutes, flip, and fry the other side for 1-2 minutes or until evenly browned. Remove with a slotted spoon.

Drain on paper towels or a baking rack.

Optionally, sprinkle warm doughnuts with powdered sugar, a cinnamon-sugar mixture, or drizzle with glaze.
