Instructions

  1. Boil 1 cup (227 grams) of water, dissolve sugar completely, then simmer for 5 minutes; cool completely.

  2. In a 1-quart jar, combine vodka, gentian root, orange peels, lemon peels, angelica root, wild cherry bark, and wormwood; seal and shake.

  3. Infuse the mixture for 10 to 14 days in a cool, dark place, shaking daily.

  4. Strain the infused liquid through a cheesecloth-lined fine-mesh strainer, repeating as needed for clarity.

  5. Combine the strained liquor with the cooled simple syrup, citric acid (if using), 1/2 cup of water, and approximately 20 drops of red food coloring to reach the desired color.

  6. Bottle the finished liquor in a 750-milliliter bottle or 1-quart jar, seal tightly, and store in a cool, dark place at room temperature.
