Homemade Butter in a Jar

Homemade fresh butter and buttermilk can be easily made from heavy cream using only a jar.

Instructions

  1. Fill a jar halfway with heavy cream and seal it tightly.

  2. Shake the jar vigorously for 5 to 8 minutes until the cream separates into a solid butter ball and milky buttermilk.

  3. Open the jar and drain the buttermilk from the solid butter.

  4. If storing, knead the butter under cold running water for up to 8 minutes until the water runs clear to remove excess buttermilk.

  5. Mix salt into the butter if desired, then refrigerate for storage.
