Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 475 F and heat a 6-quart Dutch oven for 15 minutes.

  2. Combine flour, yeast, salt, water, and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a bowl. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then gather it into a loose dough.

  3. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.

  4. Form the risen dough into a tight ball. Transfer it on parchment paper to the hot Dutch oven and bake covered for 30 minutes.

  5. Remove the lid and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until browned.

  6. Remove the bread from the pan, cool for 10 minutes. Cut off a lid and scoop out the soft interior to create a bowl; save the removed crumb. If serving dip, cut the bread lid into cubes.

  7. Brush the bowl's interior with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and bake again for 10 minutes to toast it, which helps prevent sogginess.

  8. Fill the warmed bread bowl with your preferred dip or soup and serve.
