Homemade Bagels (Parve)

Homemade bagels, prepared by simmering and baking, deliver a crusty exterior and chewy interior using a simple combination of flour, yeast, water, sugar, and salt.

Instructions

  1. Start boiling a large pot of water and preheat the oven to 375 F.

  2. Combine yeast, warm water, and sugar; let stand 10 minutes until foamy.

  3. Add flour and salt, then knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding flour if sticky.

  4. Allow the dough to rest for 20-40 minutes.

  5. Punch down the dough, divide into 12 pieces, and shape into bagels.

  6. Let the shaped bagels rest for 20 minutes.

  7. Optionally add honey to the boiling water. Simmer 4-6 bagels at a time for 2 minutes per side, then transfer to a towel-lined baking sheet.

  8. Place boiled bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, adding optional seeds.

  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, rotating halfway, until golden and crusty.

  10. Cool on a wire rack.
