Greek Macaroni and Cheese Baked Pasta Recipe

A classic Greek "au gratin" pasta dish features macaroni baked with a rich Bechamel sauce and grated cheese.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 390 F (200 C).

  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Gradually stir in flour until smooth, then remove from heat.

  3. Warm milk until hot; slowly whisk into the flour mixture.

  4. Return sauce to low heat; stir until thickened and smooth. Remove from heat.

  5. Season sauce with salt and pepper. Once cool, beat in egg yolk.

  6. Cook macaroni in salted water for half the package-recommended time. Drain and coat with half the melted butter.

  7. Beat egg whites until fluffy; fold into macaroni. Toss with half the grated cheese.

  8. Lightly butter a casserole dish. Layer with sauce, cheese, and macaroni, repeating until all macaroni is used.

  9. Pour remaining sauce over the top. Sprinkle with cheese, then breadcrumbs, and drizzle with remaining butter.

  10. Bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot.
