Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  2. Soak sliced onions in buttermilk for 10 minutes.

  3. Meanwhile, heat 2 inches of oil to 370 F in a large pot and prepare a paper towel-lined platter.

  4. Combine gluten-free flour, baking powder, 1.5 teaspoons salt, and 0.25 teaspoon pepper in a bowl.

  5. Shake excess buttermilk from half the onions, coat them in the flour mixture, and fry until golden (2 to 2.5 minutes), turning once.

  6. Transfer fried onions to paper towels, sprinkle with salt, and repeat with the remaining onions.

  7. If using fresh green beans, bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil, cook beans for 5-6 minutes until tender, then drain thoroughly; otherwise, thaw or drain frozen/canned beans as needed.

  8. Combine cooked green beans with soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and half the cheese in a large bowl.

  9. Crumble 1 cup of fried onions, fold into the green bean mixture, and season to taste.

  10. Pour the mixture into an ungreased 2-quart baking dish and bake for 25 minutes.

  11. Top the casserole with the remaining cheese and fried onions, then bake for 5 to 8 more minutes until bubbly and the cheese is melted. Serve.
