Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
-
Soak sliced onions in buttermilk for 10 minutes.
-
Meanwhile, heat 2 inches of oil to 370 F in a large pot and prepare a paper towel-lined platter.
-
Combine gluten-free flour, baking powder, 1.5 teaspoons salt, and 0.25 teaspoon pepper in a bowl.
-
Shake excess buttermilk from half the onions, coat them in the flour mixture, and fry until golden (2 to 2.5 minutes), turning once.
-
Transfer fried onions to paper towels, sprinkle with salt, and repeat with the remaining onions.
-
If using fresh green beans, bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil, cook beans for 5-6 minutes until tender, then drain thoroughly; otherwise, thaw or drain frozen/canned beans as needed.
-
Combine cooked green beans with soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and half the cheese in a large bowl.
-
Crumble 1 cup of fried onions, fold into the green bean mixture, and season to taste.
-
Pour the mixture into an ungreased 2-quart baking dish and bake for 25 minutes.
-
Top the casserole with the remaining cheese and fried onions, then bake for 5 to 8 more minutes until bubbly and the cheese is melted. Serve.
