Instructions

  1. Start boiling water in a lidded pot with 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, and 1 tbsp unsalted butter.

  2. Clean 1 pound white asparagus by snapping off woody ends and peeling the tough outer layer, starting 1 1/2 inches from each tip.

  3. Add the prepared asparagus to the simmering water, ensuring it's covered. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a knife.

  4. Remove the cooked asparagus, drain, and serve immediately with ham, melted butter, boiled new potatoes, and optional Hollandaise sauce.
