Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  2. Grease and flour 3 (8-inch-round) baking pans.

  3. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Beat in eggs one at a time.

  5. Combine cake flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.

  6. Alternate adding the flour mixture, milk, and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture; mix until a smooth batter forms.

  7. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean.

  8. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely for 1 to 2 hours.

  9. For buttercream, combine confectioners' sugar, butter, 6 tablespoons milk, and vanilla extract in a mixer; beat until creamy, adding more milk as needed for desired consistency.

  10. Stack cake layers on a platter, spreading buttercream between each layer and covering the entire cake, reserving a small amount of frosting.

  11. Using a small serrated knife, carve a geode shape into the cake.

  12. Frost the carved crevasse with the reserved frosting.

  13. Press colored rock candy into the deepest part of the crevasse and most of the way up the sides.

  14. Surround the colored rock candy with white rock candy.

  15. Paint the edges around the white rock candy with edible gold dust.
