Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
-
Grease and flour 3 (8-inch-round) baking pans.
-
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
-
Beat in eggs one at a time.
-
Combine cake flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
-
Alternate adding the flour mixture, milk, and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture; mix until a smooth batter forms.
-
Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean.
-
Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely for 1 to 2 hours.
-
For buttercream, combine confectioners' sugar, butter, 6 tablespoons milk, and vanilla extract in a mixer; beat until creamy, adding more milk as needed for desired consistency.
-
Stack cake layers on a platter, spreading buttercream between each layer and covering the entire cake, reserving a small amount of frosting.
-
Using a small serrated knife, carve a geode shape into the cake.
-
Frost the carved crevasse with the reserved frosting.
-
Press colored rock candy into the deepest part of the crevasse and most of the way up the sides.
-
Surround the colored rock candy with white rock candy.
-
Paint the edges around the white rock candy with edible gold dust.
