Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet or deep-fryer to 370 F.

  2. Rehydrate dried apples by simmering in water for 30 to 40 minutes; drain, cool, and roughly chop.

  3. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together, then cut in butter.

  4. Add milk and egg, mixing to form a soft dough; roll thin and cut into four 5-inch circles.

  5. Combine sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl.

  6. Place 1/2 cup of chopped apples in the center of each dough circle and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of the sugar mixture.

  7. Moisten the edges with milk, fold the dough over, and seal with a fork.

  8. Fry the pies until golden brown, then drain well.

  9. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
