Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. In one bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring until combined, then transfer the batter to the prepared pan.

  5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. Once cooled, use a serrated knife to cut a 2-inch wide strip down the cake's center. Remove the strip, then place the two remaining cake halves on a serving platter and push them together to form a football shape.

  8. To make the frosting, beat softened butter until smooth, then incorporate powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, and salt until combined.

  9. Reserve one cup of white frosting; mix cocoa powder into the remaining frosting.

  10. Frost the entire cake with the chocolate frosting. Using the reserved white frosting in a piping bag, pipe lines and laces onto the cake.

  11. Combine shredded coconut with green food coloring in a resealable bag, shaking until evenly colored.

  12. Sprinkle the green coconut 'grass' onto the serving platter around the cake.

  13. Chill the cake until ready to serve.
