Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
-
In one bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
-
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring until combined, then transfer the batter to the prepared pan.
-
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
-
Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Once cooled, use a serrated knife to cut a 2-inch wide strip down the cake's center. Remove the strip, then place the two remaining cake halves on a serving platter and push them together to form a football shape.
-
To make the frosting, beat softened butter until smooth, then incorporate powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, and salt until combined.
-
Reserve one cup of white frosting; mix cocoa powder into the remaining frosting.
-
Frost the entire cake with the chocolate frosting. Using the reserved white frosting in a piping bag, pipe lines and laces onto the cake.
-
Combine shredded coconut with green food coloring in a resealable bag, shaking until evenly colored.
-
Sprinkle the green coconut 'grass' onto the serving platter around the cake.
-
Chill the cake until ready to serve.
